Expressionist artist MG Stout, Mary Gallagher Stout, paints to relieve stress and exercise her brain intellectually and emotionally. “To create something original-ish, painterly, curious and optimistic,” she says. Her work is fun, uplifting and full of energy. The paintings convey dual narratives, that of the subject and painter. “I often paint five different paintings on the same canvas before I get to the final piece,” Mary says.
Born and raised in Philadelphia, PA. Mary Stout graduated magna cum laude with a degree in Philosophy. Mostly self-taught, she attended Virginia Commonwealth University’s Graduate Summer Studio Program. Her professional journey began at the Workhouse Arts Center, in Lorton VA. As a resident studio artist she curated, exhibited, and produced monthly exhibitions. Stout also began painting in DC to connect with the community and share her process. Live painting became a large part of her practice. “Art isn’t created in a vacuum,” she says. “It grows out of experiences, observations, and events. That’s why getting outside the studio to create is so important to me.” Sharing what she has learned throughout her career as a painter and “ART-tertainer,” Mary has designed and lead interactive painting workshops, as well as team building exercises for corporations and community centers.
Today her primary studio is in South Florida, but she paints in her San Francisco studio quarterly. Mary’s art studio in Pembroke Pines, South Florida is located at Studio 18 in the Pines. The Studio 18 Art Complex offers studio space for emerging and mid-career juried artists, as well as gallery and exhibition space. Stout’s work is versatile and expressionistic, ranging from large paintings, colorful abstracts, to cartoon-style pop art, and custom pet portraits. Her newest work, which can be described as a combination of portraiture with cool, abstract backgrounds, was recently selected for Artsy’s ‘CHOICE‘ Online Group Exhibition, Jen Tough Gallery, August 15 – September 30, presented by Artist Alliance: https://www.artsy.net/show/artist-alliance-choice.
Mary exhibits her work with critically acclaimed art fairs – The Other Art Fair, Superfine, Spectrum Miami, Red Dot Miami, Dallas Art Expo, and regularly participates in juried gallery exhibitions across the United States. Stout is currently working with producers to launch an ART-ertainment channel on YouTube in 2023. Her work is highly accessible and collectable.
What we like about Stout’s custom pet portraits, is that from your own photo, Mary creates an expressive one of a kind painting. A dog owner herself, the artist understands that each animal has a unique personality, and she works to convey that through her work. Using the photo as a reference, she uses charcoal and pencil to make her initial sketches directly onto the canvas. She then mixes her own custom colors, and uses layers of glazes that help to add an expressive texture to the piece. The final piece is vibrant and tries to capture the essence of what makes its subject unique. This is an unforgettable way to pay tribute to a current furry family member, or to commemorate a pet who now lives on in your heart. The Frank C. Ortis Art Gallery recently featured a solo exhibition by Mary Gallagher Stout with artworks from her Urban mixed-media series. The Frank is a multidisciplinary art gallery and exhibition hall located in Pembroke Pines, Florida. “MG Stout creates paintings with a radiant expressionist style with optimistic words and buzzing brush strokes. With an education in Philosophy, her familiar cartoon character subjects symbolize a spectrum of personas we come across in the world and possibly found within ourselves,” said The Frank of Mary’s work.
